team 500s - Antagonist Aperture

ANTAGONIST APERTURE.

It performs. It provokes. Antagonist Aperture is a shutter that is responsive to sunlight and movement, operating as a sun shading device and a provoking mediator between the individual and their view. The aperture is closed when the sun is bright, yet opens as a person approaches. A field of Apertures produces provoking views by exploiting feedback from the physical movement along the length of the material actuator. During dark hours of the day the aperture is open, yet may close upon the approach of a person to hide undesirable views or to provoke engagement with the boundary of the building. In this way, walls become active participants – antagonists – in the experience of its users.

So why is responsive kinetic architecture important? Responsive kinetic architecture can mediate between multiple inputs and outputs. In our case it allows the aperture to act as both a window and sunshade without reducing the quality of each performance. Responsive kinetic architecture also allows performance in unexpected and engaging ways by provoking its user or drawing certain views/sequence of views that allow for a designed relationship between interior and exterior.

use TWO FLEXINOL on one panel to amplify movement

The new prototype applied one more flexinol in the same panel. So that when we can hang the whole structure onto the roof, the space movement created at the human level will be amplified .

The diagram below shows our final application, which is a movable wall that creates a private space outside Room 300 Avery Hall. So essentially, a sensor would detect a person's movement, while he enters the space and triggers the wall to open, letting the person into the space. The second group of sensors detect the movement of the person after he sits down, triggers the wall to close, and creates an intimate space.

In order to get the 180 degree rotation needed to flip the first panel of the ladder gears will be used. The following movies show the trial processes to get the prototype functioning.

Hypothesis for the Experiment 3

LCD's Sort Circuits

Note in the video that I have to touch both connections for the LCD to turn on.
The resultant image is a checkerboard. I will try to change the LCD’s short Circuits in order to turn on all the pixels.

use LIGHT SENSOR
We tested the light sensor we just got. And it worked ok.
